Riprap downdrains at the RDA were found in good condition. Some coal fines have blown
onto the outslope of the upper most reclaimed bench. The operator may want to consider
some form of wind break to prevent future issues from accumulating coal fines on the
reclamation, should the pile surface remain uncovered and unreclaimed for an indefinite
period.
Support Facilities
Work continues on portal and fan openings in preparation to breach the seals on the
underground workings. A crew was observed working at the East Portal fan and work was
noted at the West Portal and fan area on May 19. Debris and soil near the portal openings
was being removed to measure and construct security grates at the portals. The West Portal
fan housing was also being constructed and will be placed over the shaft once approval is
granted by MSHA to remove the shaft cap.
AU-EN MINE
II
Revegetation
Reclaimed areas are progressing normal for this time of year. Houndstongue was noted at
both the West Portal and along the 100-year ditch at the RDA. These weeds and other
noxious weeds should be treated immediately to avoid flowering, seeding, and spreading.
Overall, the site appeared normal for the spring season and in compliance with the approved
permit and the Rules.
5
