Hydrogeological Evaluation of Sunday Mines Group
Introduction
0 Section 1
Introduction
1.1 Purpose of Investigation
This investigation was conducted to provide information regarding hydrogeological
conditions at the Sunday Mines Group in accordance with a March 31, 2008 letter
from Denison Mines (USA) Corporation (Denison) to the Colorado Division of
Reclamation Mining and Safety (DBMS).
1.2 Location of Facilities
The Sunday Mines Group is located in San Miguel County, Colorado. The mines
produce uranium and vanadium ore from mineral deposits of the Uravan District,
which is one of the major uranium-producing mineral districts in the United States.
The ore is transported to a mill located near Blanding, Utah for mineral processing.
Mines in this area have been active on an intermittent basis since the 1950's. The
Sunday Mines Group includes:
¦ The Sunday Mine;
¦ The Carnation Mine;
• ¦ The West Sunday Mine;
¦ The St. Jude Mine; and
¦ The Topaz Mine.
The location of the Sunday Mines Group is shown on Figure 1-1.
The affected areas of the mines include "...the surface of an area within the state
where a mining operation is or will be conducted... (Colorado Revised Statutes Title
34, Article 32, Section 103 (CRS § 34-32-103)]. Facilities present within affected areas of
the Sunday Mine, the West Sunday Mine, the St. Jude Mine and the Topaz Mine are
similar with mine portals, development rock storage facilities, changing rooms, offices
and workshops present on all sites. The Carnation mine affected area currently only
includes a mine portal and two development rock storage areas with existing
vegetative growth on them.
The Sunday Mines Group also includes underground workings such as decline adits
leading into the mines from the affected areas, ventilation shafts, and various
underground stopes and drifts. The Carnation deposit is currently being mined
underground and the mine portal is a part of the Sunday Mines Group ventilation
circuit, but disturbance within the affected area of the mine is currently limited.
