• (8) A narrative which addresses the environmental aspects associated with the proposed
mine which includes, at a minimum, the following:
(i) An estimate of the quantity of water to be used and pollutants that may enter any
receiving waters;
The quantity of water to be used under this POD is small and will be trucked to the site by
commercial water providers operating in the area.
In accordance with this POD, the Pilot Test will be designed, constructed and operated in a
manner that avoids pollutants from entering potential receiving waters. Potential receiving
waters include ground water and surface waters. This POD includes monitoring the potentially
impacted ground and surface waters to confirm the success of this POD or provide early
detection and correction of unexpected pollutant entry into any receiving water.
Exploration results identified potential receiving waters above the mining interval but not within
or below the mining interval. The mining interval is undergoing extensive laboratory and field
testing to prove that the Illite Mining Interval will tightly contain the Pilot Test retort and prevent
ground water pollutant entry from the retort. The heater-producer well includes a multiple
confinement barrier system to protect the overhead ground water from pollutant entry. The
heater-producer well also contains multiple thermal insulating barriers to prevent retorting the oil
shale surrounding the wellbore. The hottest planned operating temperature within the heater-
producer well is below the 200 °C minimum retorting temperature making the thermal insulation
• barriers redundant. If it becomes advantageous to produce or reflux fluids in the heater-producer
well at a temperature greater than 200 °C, temperature monitoring will confirm that the heater-
producer well is not capable of retorting the well bore oil shale.
AMSO will conduct the Pilot Retort Test in accordance with its Spill Prevention, Control, and
Countermeasures (SPCC) Plan (see Appendix 8-1). By closely following this SPCC Plan,
AMSO will prevent any spills from entering any receiving waters.
U
48
