• Crews with 5 persons or more may only exceed a 20 percent SSE employee component
with the approval of the SSHO prior to beginning work. Crews with a 30 percent SSE
component must receive written approval from a WWL principal.
All SSE personnel will have an assigned experienced employee (mentor) to assist the SSE
employee during his/her evaluation period. The mentor will train the SSE on all new
tasks, routinely observe SSE during performance of work, request feedback from others
having knowledge of SSE work practices, provide immediate feedback to SSE regarding
positive and negative observations, and keep SSHO informed as to the SSE progress.
The SSE will not perform a task without specific training and supervision.
SSE's may be identified by a sticker, a color-specific hard hat, or other identification
carried and visible at all times.
A SSE will be removed from evaluation status once the employee demonstrates
competence in performing tasks in accordance with proper safety and health procedures
and protocols, and attended required relevant safety and health training.
The SSE evaluation period can range from 3 to 6 months. Removal of the employee from
SSE status requires approval of the acting Senior Safety and Health Officer.
• SSE personnel who do not attain non-SSE status within a 6-month period of repetitive
task work must remain under the supervision of experienced personnel.
•
3.4 Permit-To-Work (PTW) Process
AMSO utilizes a Permit-To-Work (PTW) process for routine and non-routine work activities to
ensure hazards and risks associated with these activities are identified and safeguarded. The
PTW process is a comprehensive process for analyzing, planning, authorizing, and executing
work in a manner to prevent safety and health incidents and is much more than simply issuing
permission to conduct certain jobs.
3.4.1 Work Permit
The Work Permit is a written document that authorizes identified personnel to conduct certain
work activities within designated boundary conditions such as time, place, and the specific work
steps required to ensure the job is completed in a manner to prevent safety and health incidents.
The Work Permit will generally be issued on a daily basis and re-issued at a shift/tour change or
significant change in hazard classification of job assignment. Consult the AMSO representative
for those work activities that shall require a Work Permit, as well as those activities which may
