AMSO employees and subcontractor employees are required to adhere to the provisions of the
Hazard Communication Standard. Information on hazardous materials known to be Present
will be exchanged with other employers and subcontractors. Subcontractors will be responsible
for providing necessary information to their employees.
3.3 Short Service Employee Program
To provide overall better work place safety, AMSO has implemented a short service employee
(SSE) program. The SSE program provides for adequate introduction, training, and
observations of new employees to the work place. Any new employee with less than 6 months in
the same job or position is considered a short service employee. This includes employees with
significant experience at their previous place of employment.
The purpose of the SSE program is to increase overall safety and health of the new employee and
of "seasoned" fellow employees, by exposing the new employee to experienced personnel or
mentor. The SSE serves a "evaluation" status until the acting Senior Safety and Health Officer
(SSHO) approves the employee for regular (non-SSE) worker status. The AMSO SSE program
i includes the following elements.
A one-roan crew cannot be a SSE. SSEs are allowed to conduct errands while alone, but
not conduct work tasks on a project site.
Two to 4-man crews may have only 1 SSE per crew.
Crews with 5 persons or more may only exceed a 20 percent SSE employee component
with the approval of the SSHO prior to beginning work. Crews with a 30 percent SSE
component must receive written approval from a WL principal.
All SSE personnel will have an assigned experienced employee (mentor) to assist the SSE
employee during his/her evaluation period. The mentor will train the SSE on all new
tasks, routinely observe SSE during performance of work, request feedback from others
having knowledge of SSE work practices, provide immediate feedback to SSE regarding
positive and negative observations, and keep SSHO informed as to the SSE progress.
The SSE will not perform a task without specific training and supervision.
SSE's may be identified by a sticker, a color-specific hard hat, or other identification
carried and visible at all times.
A SSE will be removed from evaluation status once the employee demonstrates
competence in performing tasks in accordance with proper safety and health procedures
and protocols, and attended required relevant safety and health training.
