SECTION 5.6: SEDIMENT CONTROL <br />SC 9: Brush Barrier <br />Description A temporary sediment barrier constructed at the perimeter of a disturbed <br />area from the residue materials available from clearing and grubbing the site, <br />and generally covered with filter fabric. <br />Applications <br />• Used for the purpose of intercepting and retaining sediment from <br />disturbed areas of limited extent. <br />• Used to prevent sediment from leaving the site. <br />• Used as a temporary feature. <br />Limitations <br />• Should be used only in areas of sheet or very law flow. <br />• Should not be used in a developed area where they could be a visual <br />problem. <br />Materials <br />• <br />Brush barriers are constructed at the time of clearing and grubbing, and <br />consist of brush, limbs, root mat, weeds, vines, soil, rock, and <br />tuunerchantable timber. <br />Installation <br />• Height of a brush barrier shall be 3 feet minimum. <br />• The width of a brush barrier shall be a minimum of i feet at its base. The <br />sizes of brush barriers may vary considerably based upon the amount of <br />material available and the judgment of the designer. <br />• The barrier shall be constructed according to Figure SC 9.1 by piling <br />brush, stone, root mat, and other material from the clearing process ini:o a <br />mounded row on the contour. <br />• The filter fabric shall be cut into lengths sufficient to lay across the barrier <br />from its upslope base to just beyond its peak. Where joints are necessary, <br />the fabric shall be spliced together with a minimum 6 inches overlap and <br />securely sealed. <br />SC 9: BRUSH BARRIER <br />• <br />5-69
