Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide, H2S)
There has been no continuous or recent monitoring for sulfide at the downstream
monitoring location on North Thompson Creek, thus there is no direct information to
determine the relationship of downstream concentrations of sulfide with the Numeric
Standard. However, there was baseline, but has been no other, monitoring for sulfide.
This baseline monitoring results suggest that sulfide concentrations may be above the
Numeric Standard downstream in North Thompson Creek, but that there is no effect from
Outfall 001 discharges. The Numeric Standard for sulfide (S, undissociated H2S) is 0.002
mg/1. Sulfide was detected in North Thompson Creek upstream and downstream baseline
sampling up to 0.1 mg/l. Sulfide was undetected in Mine No. 1 and Mine No. 3 mine
water, the sources of Outfall 001 discharges. There is a distinct hydrogen sulfide odor
from Spring No. 1 and the seep below Portal 1, but none has been reported for other
locations. Mine water discharge inflows are aerated at the beginning of the treatment
system and by the drop outlet at Outfall 001. No sulfur smell at these sites has been
reported.
Boron (B)
The Numeric Standard for boron is 0.75 mg/l. There was baseline, but there has been no
continuous or recent monitoring, for boron. There has been no monitoring of Outfall 001
discharges for Boron. Boron was detected in baseline upstream, downstream, and Mine
No. 1 inflows, all at concentrations below the Numeric Standard. Thus boron Numeric
Standards are likely not exceeded in North Thompson Creek.
Chloride (Cl)
Monitoring results suggest that the Numeric Standard for chloride is not exceeded in
downstream flows. The Numeric Standard for chloride (Cl) is 250 mg/l. Chloride values
from outfall 001 have ranged from 40.2 mg/l to 78.8 mg/l with an average of 55.9 mg/l.
There are signs of slightly increased chloride values downstream of outfall 001.
Sulfate (SO4)
Monitoring results suggest that Outfall 001 discharges may have an effect on
concentrations of sulfate in North Thompson Creek, but that downstream sulfate
concentrations are below the Numeric Standard. The Numeric Standard for sulfate (SO4)
is 250 mg/1. Sulfate values for outfall 001 have ranged from 236 mg/l to 420 mg/l, with
an average of 307 mg/l.
North Thompson Creek C-1981-025
Permit Renewal 05
12 May 2009
,,25
