coliforms to North Thompson Creek. The landowner does run cattle and horses on
reclaimed areas of the site. The Numeric Standard for F Coli is 2000/100 ml.
Inorganic
Ammonia (NHO
There was baseline stream and mine inflow monitoring, but no continuous or recent
monitoring for ammonia in North Thompson Creek. There has been no monitoring for
ammonia in the discharge at Outfall 001. The Numeric Standard (chronic) for ammonia is
0.02 mg/1. The results of mine inflow monitoring suggest a potential for ammonia in
Outfall 001 discharges at concentrations above the Numeric Standard. However, baseline
monitoring of stream flows suggests that levels of ammonia are already above the
Numeric Standard and the concentrations in Outfall 001 discharge. Thus there is no effect
on North Thompson Creek with regards to ammonia from Outfall 001 discharges.
Chlorine (C12)
There has been no monitoring for chlorine. The Numeric Standard (chronic) for chlorine
is 0.011 mg/1. Mine water discharges are aerated at the beginning of the treatment system
and by the drop outlet at Outfall 001 from the final treatment pond. North Thompson
Creek itself is well aerated by turbulent flows.
Cyanide (CN)
There has been no monitoring for cyanide. The Numeric Standard for cyanide is 0.005
mg/l.
Nitrate (NOO
There has been no continuous or recent monitoring for nitrate at the downstream
monitoring location on North Thompson Creek, thus there is no direct information to
determine the relationship of downstream concentrations of nitrate with the Numeric
Standard for nitrate. However, baseline monitoring suggests that there is no effect on
nitrate concentrations in North Thompson Creek from Outfall 001 discharges, and that
the Numeric Standard is not exceeded in downstream flows. The Numeric Standard for
nitrate (NOO is 10 mg/l. Nitrate was not detected in sources of Mine No. 1 or Mine No. 3
water, the sources of Outfall 001 discharge. Nitrate ranged from undetectable to 0.04
mg/1 in baseline upstream sampling. It ranged from undetectable to 0.06 mg/1 in baseline
downstream flows.
Nitrite (NO2)
The Numeric Standard for nitrite is 0.05 mg/l. There has been no monitoring for nitrite.
North Thompson Creek C-1981-025
Permit Renewal 05
12 May 2009
24
