Greg Lewicki And Associates, PLLC
11541 Warrington Court Phone (303) 346-5196 Fax: (303)-346-6934
Parker, CO USA 80138 E-Mail:info@lewicki.biz
April 28, 2009
MCI
To: Dan Mathews
From: Greg Lewicki
RE: Revegetation Plan for the Elam's Vagneur Pit
Given your 30 years + of experience of dryland western slope reclamation and revegetation, your
recommendation on the enclosed revegetation plan for Elam's Vagneur Pit near Woody Creek,
Colorado would be extremely helpful.
As we discussed on the phone, an adjacent landowner has expressed concern that the reclamation of
the site (using grasses) will look different than surrounding areas that have large amounts of sage. We
would like to explore changes to the revegetation plan that may provide this added shrub component
that the landowner desires. The attached map shows the basic details of the site. The reclamation plan
calls for 12" of topsoil to be replaced on site prior to revegetation. The topsoil to do this has been
stockpiled on site. The elevation is approximately 7350 feet.
Overall, the reclamation plan will create 3H:1 V slopes leading to a relatively flat bottom
approximately 30-45 feet below the pre-mine terrace. Your recommendation for the reclamation seed
mix and procedures of application would be presented to the County, and if accepted by them and the
landowner, would be changed in the permit as part of a technical revision.
The current revegetation plan is listed below.
The dry rangeland seed mix will be applied to the slopes of the pit as well as the flat areas on the perimeter of the pit to
include the pit floor. This seed mix has been developed based on a post-mining use of dry rangeland. It will be more than
adequate to control erosion for the site and provide good cover. Once sufficient ground cover is established sage seeds will
be planted along the slopes as per the seed plan.
