• 13.13 Climate
Climatic data, including evaporation, mean annual precipitation, temperature and average
wind direction, are provided in Section 4.10 of the Project Description.
13.14 Geochemical Data and Analysis
Information addressing the geochemical evaluation of the materials to be mined as part of
the MLE operations is provided above in Section 4.5 of this Project Description and in
Appendix 1, Volume II. The geochemical evaluation was conducted on rock samples
from drilling throughout the Cresson Project and from blast hole data, and is considered
representative of the materials to be mined or stockpiled or backfilled. The geochemical
evaluation also included an analysis of the reasonable sources, probable fate, and
transport mechanisms of metal and acid-producing minerals that may be mobilized
during operations and reclamation.
Acid base accounting was conducted for the entire rockmass that will be mined from now
until the completion of the proposed MLE. The methodology used was to identify for
each 50' x 50' x 35' block of material that will be mined the expected total sulfur and
total carbon concentrations, based on a total of 30,758 LECO furnace analyses. A total of
42 long-term accelerated weathering tests of samples of the rockmass in and adjacent to
the diatreme were completed using the ASTM Test Method D5744-96, Standard Test
Method for Accelerated Weathering of Solid Materials Using a Modified Humidity Cell.
The results of the analysis indicate that no deleterious change in the average regional
ground water quality from the District will occur due to current or proposed mining.
13.15 Construction Schedule Information
The Phase 5 VLF is the only new facility proposed as part of the MLE which will contain
or use designated chemicals. The existing VLF and ADR facilities will continue to
contain or use designated chemicals with no new construction planned for these facilities.
The anticipated construction schedule for the Phase 5 VLF is discussed in Sections 5.4
and 6.3 of this Project Description and in Appendix 8, Volumes V through VI.
Construction of Phase 5 of the VLF is anticipated be begin in 2009 and will take
approximately 3 construction seasons to complete. Utilities within the Phase 5 new liner
footprint will be relocated in 2009, followed by preparation of the subgrade. The SLF is
expected to be constructed in 2010. The liner is expected to be placed in 2011. The actual
construction schedule will depend on various factors, with weather conditions during the
construction season being an important consideration.
• Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
13-10
