•
Construction of Phase 5 of the VLF is anticipated to begin in 2009 and take about 3
construction seasons to complete. Utilities within the Phase 5 extension area footprint
will be relocated in 2009, followed by preparation of the subgrade. The SLF is expected
to be constructed in 2010. The liner will be placed in 2011. The actual construction
schedule will depend on various factors, with weather conditions during the construction
season being an important consideration.
6.3.1 Clearing and Soil Stripping
Preparation of the foundation for Phase 5 includes clearing and grubbing of
vegetation and stripping of unsuitable foundation material. Observations indicate
that some suitable growth medium material may be available from the Phase 5
area. Much of the area has been affected by previous activities and the actual
quantity of growth medium available may vary from the estimated volumes. This
growth medium will be placed in one of the stockpiles as shown on Drawing C-
4b.
6.3.2 Site Regrading
Along the western edge of the Phase 5 PSSA, the foundation will consist of
compacted Phase IV ore. The Phase IV ore will be regraded to support
geomembrane liner placement. The regraded ore surface will be ripped, moisture
conditioned, and compacted to provide a firm surface for the PSSA. This is
similar to the construction of the Phase IV PSSA over the Phase III ore slope.
The eastern edge of the PSSA and the VLF will be founded on either compacted
fill over bedrock or compacted AGOSA overburden. In areas adjacent to Squaw
Mountain, the PSSA and VLF will be founded on compacted fill overlying
granodiorite bedrock. The northeastern section of the PSSA and VLF will be
founded on regraded AGOSA overburden. To reduce the potential for differential
settlement due to large variances in particle size in the OSA, a 3-foot thick layer
of structural fill will be placed and compacted over the regraded AGOSA slope.
In some areas, geogrid and/or geotextile will be used to bridge between gaps in
regraded slope and help distribute localized differential settlement.
Along the northern edge of the PSSA and VLF, the foundation will consist of
compacted structural fill. Compacted structural fill will form the northern
termination berm for the VLF and the PSSA embankment.
