• of 6.2, average nitrate values of 9.4 mg/L, and average sulfate values of 740
mg/L.
Gold Run
Three wells were used to summarize the water quality in the Gold Run watershed:
GRMW-2A and -3A are completed in the granite in the upper reaches of the
watershed and GRMW-IA is completed in the lower reaches of the watershed.
All wells were installed in mid-1998. Water levels vary by less than 10 feet.
Overall, the ground water in Gold Run is characterized by calcium-sulfate-
bicarbonate solutions with neutral pH, low nitrates and average sulfate values of
707 mg/L, 1,723 mg/L and 184 mg/L in GRMW-IA, GRMW-2A, and GRMW-
3A, respectively.
Squaw Gulch
Water quality was summarized for four wells and one shallow piezometer in
Squaw Gulch. The oldest well was installed in 1994 and the most recent well was
installed in 1998. The monitoring wells are designated SGMW-3A (diatreme),
SGMW-3B (alluvium/shallow diatreme), SGMW-5 (granite), and SGMW-6. The
• shallow piezometer is screened in the alluvium and is designated SG-04PZ. Five
monitoring wells have been plugged and abandoned in Squaw Gulch due to the
development and expansion of the SGOSA. Seasonal fluctuations of water levels
are seen in the piezometer and alluvial well. SGMW-5 and SGMW-6 have shown
dry conditions since they were installed. Ground water levels in SGMW-3A vary
from 141.7 to 150 feet bellow ground surface ("bgs").
Overall, the ground water in Squaw Gulch is characterized as calcium-sulfate
dominated. Data show an average pH value of 4.9 in the alluvium (SG-04-PZ)
and an average pH value of 6.1 in the shallow bedrock (SGMW-3B). Nitrate
values average 3.7 mg/l in the alluvium and 0.96 mg/l in the shallow bedrock.
Sulfate values average 421 mg/1 in the alluvium and 701 mg/l in the shallow
bedrock. Deeper ground water quality data (SGMW-5 and SGMW-6) are absent
due to the dry conditions as a result of historic drainage of the diatreme.
Grassy Valley
There have been 42 wells monitored in the Grassy Creek Valley. Three
piezometers and five wells were drilled in 2007 to supplement the hydrogeologic
characterization of Grassy Valley. There are 18 wells and piezometers in Grassy
•
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
4-14
