• Ground water data have been summarized for approximately 26 monitoring wells
in the Cresson Project area. The wells have been monitored on at least a quarterly
basis at most locations with some locations sampled more frequently. Following
is a discussion of the information from the ground water evaluation contained in
Appendix 2 and a summary of information derived from monitoring and other site
specific investigations.
Wilson Creek
There are three active monitoring wells completed in the granite in the Wilson
Creek watershed: WCMW-2, WCMW-3, and WCMW-6. There were nine other
wells that have been abandoned due to mine progress. The water levels are high
and vary seasonally. Two of the three wells are calcium bicarbonate wells, and the
WCWM-2 is a calcium chloride well. Data show average field pH values of 7.8,
7.3 and 7.7 in WCMW-2, WCMW-3, and WCMW-6, respectively. Data show
average nitrate values of 4.22 mg/l, 5.15 mg/l, and 0.08 mg/l in WCMW-2,
WCMW-3, and WCMW-6, respectively. Data show average sulfate values of 136
mg/1, 203 mg/l, and 22 mg/1 in WCMW-2, WCMW-3, and WCMW-6,
respectively.
Vindicator Valley
Water quality was summarized for two wells in Vindicator Valley, VIN-2B, an
alluvial well, and VIN-2A, a shallow granite well. Data has been collected at
VIN-2B since May 4, 2004, and at VIN-2A since January 20, 2005. VIN-2A has
almost been totally dry since completion, and only field parameters have been
collected. Historic wells in the watershed, VIN-1A and VIN-1B were replaced by
VIN 2A and 2B. Overall, the ground water in Vindicator Valley is characterized
by calcium-sulfate dominated water with near neutral pH, nitrate values near the
detection limit and sulfate values which average 671 mg/L.
Arequa Gulch
There are three existing monitoring wells in the Arequa Gulch watershed:
ESPMW-1 and CRMW-3B are completed in the granite and CRMW-3A is
completed in the alluvium. Five other wells were monitored historically in Arequa
Gulch, but were abandoned when mining operations expanded. The CRMW wells
are both calcium sulfate waters, while the ESPMW-1 is a calcium bicarbonate
water. The ESPMW-1 well exhibits different characteristics from the CRMW-3B,
• but both wells exhibit normal water quality. The alluvial well has an average pH
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
4-13
