Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The following is a brief summary of the bond forfeiture and reclamation chronology at
the Sunlight Mine south of Glenwood Springs. This information was obtained from the
Laserfiche system and is only as complete as the information therein. The list of
documents shown in the archive tab of the permit system shows what appears to be a
more complete record. If further information is needed the appropriate boxes will need to
be retrieved from archives.
18 June 1986 - 12 November 1986 - 4 unabated NOV's issued at Sunlight.
4 March 1987 - MLRD issues Show Cause Order.
22 April 1987 - MLRD forfeits bond (on or around this date). There are no details
regarding the permit revocation or any board hearings or ruling.
27 April 1987 - MLRD notifies possible lien holders of Sunlight bond forfeiture.
21 July 1987 - MLRD receives bond monies from Transamerica Insurance Services
($9,800). Ultimately, the Division ends up with $11,800 for reclamation. Although no
details exist as to where the additional $1,805 came from it appears as though there may
have been a $2,000 cash bond as well.
31 December 1987 - MLRD prepares reclamation plan and estimate for Sunlight
(estimated reclamation cost is $27,500).
11 January 1988 - MLRD revises reclamation plan and estimate to match available
bond monies (the new estimate is $10,900).
3 February 1988 - MLRD notifies Garfield Energy Corporation (permittee) of pending
reclamation and requests that Garfield Energy dismantle and remove all structures if they
want to retain the salvage value.
29 March 1988 - MLRD notifies Garfield Energy of its intention to proceed with
reclamation and requests a list of lien holders.
27 April 1988 - MLRD contacts potential lien holders to notify them of their possible
rights to any structures/machinery on the site.
office of office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
