• Production
(Table 9)
Total average production was 1272.3 Ibs per acre. Introduced annual and biennial forbs
contributed the majority with an average production of 756.6 Ibs per acre. Native perennial cool
season grasses contributed the second most amount of production with 228.4 Ibs per acre. Five
other lifeforms were present with less than 110 Ibs per acre.
Woody Plant Density
(Table 10)
Total average density of woody plants was 238.8 stems per acre, entirely composed of native
shrubs. Big sagebrush was the dominant species contributing 197.5 stems per acre. Five other
native shrubs were present including silver sagebrush (Serphidium canum), bitterbrush (Purshia
tridentata), chokecherry (Padus virginiana spp. melanocarpa), Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelil),
and Saskatoon serviceberry.
Reference Areas
is ASPEN REFERENCE AREA
(Photographs 25-28)
Cover
(Table 11)
Native perennial forbs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Aspen Reference Area,
contributing 81.9 percent all-hit cover consisting predominately of western aniseroot (Osmorhiza
occidentallis) with 20.5 percent all-hit cover. Native shrubs were the second most encountered
lifeform with 47.7 percent all-hit cover. Of this, Saskatoon serviceberry and mountain snowberry
contributed 16.2 and 12.9 percent all-hit cover. Native trees were the third most observed lifeform
contributing 34.0 percent all-hit cover consisting entirely of Aspen (Populus tremuloides).
Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 95.1 percent. Total average vegetation cover,
for all hits, was 179.1 percent. Standing dead, litter, and rock each had 0.5, 2.8, and 1.9 percent
cover, respectively (first hits). Average species density was 35.5 species per 100 sq.m.
Production
(Table 12)
Total average production was 2059.2 Ibs per acre. Native perennial forbs contributed the majority
• with an average production of 1873.6 Ibs per acre. The second most abundant lifeform was
12
