Site Description (cont) Exhibit B
VEGETATION INFORMATION
1. Current cover percent is: 45 to 65%
2. Topsoil depth on site averages: 0 to 7 inches
3. Seeding dates recommended: October 15 to May 1.
4. Fertilizer, if needed: Phosphate @ 40 lb/ac and nitrogen @ 40 lb/ac.
5. Seeding recommendation for area:
Non-irrigated grass seed recommendation
Seed Rate PLS/acre
Western Wheatgrass (Arriba) 10.0
Sideoats grama (Vaughn) 6.5
Blue Grama (Lovington) 0.5
Winter Wheat 25.0
42.0'
This seed mix and rates was prepared by the local NRCS office
at our request for us on other mining operations in the area. It
has proven successful on other sites in the vicinity of this mine.
The seed will be drilled where possible and doubled if broadcast.
The site is currently part of a terrace deposit above the Huerfano
River located in a Loamy Plains range site unit north of
Walsenburg, Colorado. It has no special or unique characteristics
with mostly grass, cactus and sage brush covering the area.
Between the current mining area and the county road is an area
that was mined sometime in the past. It appears that whoever mined
the area worked the face of the deposit back from the county road
until their project ended. We suspect this area was mined to
provide material for I-25 which lies 1.5 miles east of the mine.
This area has no topsoil on it and the vegetation has more cactus
and sage brush then the surrounding rangeland. Average annual
production is approximately 300 pounds per acre. The plant commu-
nity is 60 to 75 percent grasses and 25 to 40 percent cactus and
brush.
The species of vegetation found on the old mine site are Blue
grama, Western wheatgrass, Sand dropseed, Little bluestem, Indian
rice grass and Sideoats grama. These grass species makeup 85% to
90%, by weight, of the vegetation found on the site. Ground cover
is sparse in this area in comparison with the undisturbed areas
south of the old mining face.
On the areas that were not disturbed by mining the vegetation
consists of mostly grass with some cactus. Average annual produc-
tion is approximately 1,000 pounds per acre. Grasses make up
approximately 90% of the vegetative cover and the plant community
is 80 to 90 percent grasses and 10 to 20 percent cactus and brush.
This area has a good grass cover because the site has not been
grazed for quite some time.
The species of vegetation found on the site are Blue grama,
Gallate, Western Wheatgrass, Sand dropseed, Buffalograss, and
Sideoats grama. These grass species makeup 85% to 90%, by weight,
of the vegetation found on the site.
NOTE: 1/ Indicated rate if drilled. The mixtures will be doubled if broadcast.
20
