3-7
•

•
3.2 TOPSOIL REMOVAL AND STORAGE
Three soil units occur in the 4.75 acre area of the sediment pond, Construction
Material and Topsoil Stockpiles and Coal Mine Waste Pile. The Rivra gravely sand loam
variant (.98 acres), Nihill loam (0.3 acres), and Glendive Sandy Loam (3.47 acres).
Recommended stripping depths are 12 inches,18 inches, and 24 inches respectively,
based upon data presented in Table 4.4-2, Soils Inventory, McClane Canyon Mine
(WRDC 1982a).
Volumes of topsoil available for stripping and stockpiling have been calculated
from the area of the soil mapping units and recommended stripping depths. The topsoil
storage area is north of the sediment pond. Vegetation will not be stripped from the
storage area prior to stockpiling. The stockpile area is about 30,000 Sq. Ft. (0.7 acre).
The volume of material to be stockpiled is about 11,500 CY (including approximately
1850 CY in the existing topsoil stockpile that will be moved and combined with the new
pile) and the stockpile will reach a height up to 24 feet.
Subsoil will be salvaged from the founding of the coal mine waste disposal area
and excavation from the Sediment Pond and placed in the construction material
stockpile which will have a capacity of approximately 12,000 CY (including
approximately 2000 CY in the existing stockpile that will be moved and combined with
the new pile).
The salvaged soil should have good characteristics. It will be imperfectly mixed,
but the soil characteristics are shown below:
Characteristic Average Range
Texture Scl-SI SI-L
Electrical Cond. 0.6 mmhos/cm 0.5 to 0.9 mmhos/cm
SAR 1.0 0.2 to 1.3
PH 7.0 6.3 to 8.0
Organic Matter 0.6% 0.2-0.9%
Gravels <10% 0-40%
Water Availability 0.8 in/in 0.5-1.0 in/in
Permeability mod. rapid mod. rapid to rapid
Topsoil will be removed by rubber tired scrapers with the assistance of tracked
dozers or a track mounted backhoe and truck equipment spread. Topsoil material
generated from the initial disturbance will be placed in the stockpiles shown on Figure
2.2-3.
During storage the topsoil stockpile will be stabilized with the temporary seed mix
listed on Table 3.4-2. Weed cover will be controlled via the most appropriate technique,
and if the weeds are noxious they will be managed in accordance with Section 4.5.14.
This will decrease problems with weed competition during final reclamation.
TR-16 M`-Volume 1
(Rev 10/08)
