2.0 INTRODIICTION
$pdro-Search, Ina. (H5I) was engaged by Powder Horn Coal Company (PCC) to
provide a reconnaissance level alluvial valley floor (AVF) investigation of
the Rapid and Cottonwood Creeks area ir. western Colorado. The purpose of
this investigation was to identify the presence of an AVF based on the
geologic, hydrologic, and agricultural setting of the ar ea. The project
area is approximately 10 miles northeast of Grand Junction, Colorado, and is
immediately east of the Colorado River.
As defined by the Colorado Mired Land Reclamation Board (MLR) an AVF is
comprised of:
•
"...unconsolidated stream-laid deposits holding streams with water
availability sufficient for subirrigation or flood irrigation
agricultural activities but does not include upland areas which
are generally overlain by a thin veneer of colluvial deposits
composed chiefly of debris from sheet erosion, deposits Pormed by
unconcentrated accumulations, and windblown. deposits..."
(Colorado Department of Natural Resources, 1980).
The criteria used in this investigation to identify an AVF' are:
1. the presence of unconsolidated streamlaid deposits which hold
streams, and
2. the presence of sufficient water to support agricultural activities
as evidenced by:
the existence of flood irrigation,
the capability of an area to be flood irrigated, and
subirrigation of the lands in question by the ground-water
system of the valley floor.
\J
3
Hydro-Search, If1C.
