The area of the waste pile has been subjected to subsurface
mining activity in the past. Considerations relating to undermining
of the site have been covered in considerable detail by others.
FIELD INVESTIGATION:
The site has been the subject of a report by Lincoln-DeVOre
Testing Laboratory dated April 29, 1980 entitled "Foundation Investi-
gation, Coal Canyon Waste Pile Site, Cameo, Colorado". This study
was concerned primarily with subsurface mining activity and potential
subsidence. Zn the course of this study, nine deep test borings were
drilled in tYe area of the proposed waste pile. The Lincoln-DeVOre
report was reviewed by personnel of ROCKY MOUNTAIN GEOTECHNICAL in
order to determine the thickness of alluvium above bedrock, the
nature of bedrock materials, anc to obtain recommendations concerning
potential subsidence and collapse on this site.
Another study, also perforr..ed by Lincoln-DeVOre Testing Labora-
tcry, was pE+rfromed on the existino coal refuse pile at the Roadside
hiine located to the south and east of the proposed waste pile. 1~'hile
this report was not performed on the site in question, it did contain a
significant amount of data for the coal refLSe materials which will
be essentially the same as those to be placed on Pile No. 3. ROCKY
MOUNTAIN GEOTECHNICAL personnel in~'estigated this report primarily to
obtain in-place densities for the coal waste materials.
