Both embankments were well vegetated
and appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted on either pond
embankment at the time of the inspection.
- Sediment Pond 5A-P1, just below the 5A portals, was dry at the time of the
inspection. The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable.
No erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment at the time of the
inspection. The ditch from the 100,000 gallon water tank above the portal bench
appeared to be stable as well.
- Sediment Ponds 9-P1 and 9-P6, by the newly permitted solid waste disposal area,
were both dry at the time of the inspection. These ponds collect the runoff from the
solid waste disposal area and the adjacent refuse pile. Both pond embankments
were well vegetated and appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted
on either pond embankment at the time of the inspection.
Backfilling and Grading: - The backfilled #4 portal area appeared to be stable at the
time of the inspection. There was no noticeable settling and there were no erosional
problems.
- The solid waste disposal area appeared to remain stable. There was no settling or
cracking of the backfill noted at the time of the inspection. The area was well
graded and reports to a sediment pond.
Processing Waste: - The refuse pile by the solid waste disposal area was well graded
and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. The pile appears to have
positive drainage and there was no water pooling on the surface of the pile. There
were no erosional problems noted at the time of the inspection. The operator has a
D8 dozer by the pile and it was indicated that this pile will be reclaimed soon.
- The other refuse pile just north of this one also remained stable. This pile appeared
to have positive drainage and there was no water pooling on the surface of the pile
at the time of the inspection.
Support Facilities: - The 5A portal area appeared to be in good condition at the time
of the inspection. No problems were noted.
Topsoil: - All of the topsoil piles were well vegetated and appeared stable at the time
of the inspection. There were no erosional problems noted on any of the piles. All of
the piles had the appropriate signage
Fish and Wildlife: - There was a small herd of deer on the #4 portal area as well as the
adjacent area where the office building was demolished.
- There was a large herd of around 200 elk on the hillside just east of the reclaimed
Oakie Plaza area. Some of the elk were crossing the mine entrance road as we
entered the site.
