Colowyo C-1981-019
18 March 2009
Pg 417
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) Contained some water
but was not discharging at the time of the inspection. There was water flowing into
the pond from snowmelt. There are two potential issues that were noted at the
Gulch A pond. First, the water in the pond was very muddy (the sediment is not
settling out). If this water were to discharge it would be an exceedance of the TSS
standard. It is important that when this pond discharges Colowyo take an additional
sample for settleable solids (if there is water flowing into the pond or if it is within 48-
hours of any inflow). Second, there is a lot of debris floating on the top of the pond.
Colowyo needs to keep an eye on this debris to ensure that it does not clog either
the weep hole or the principle spillway. The pond embankment is well vegetated
and stable at the time of the inspection. There were no erosional problems noted on
the pond embankment at the time of the inspection. Goodspring Creek, which runs
along the Gulch A Pond, was flowing higher with the snowmelt.
- The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009) was inaccessible and not inspected (and will
probably remain inaccessible until late spring).
- The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) contained water approximately one foot below the
top of the discharge pipe and was discharging from the weep hole. The discharge
was clear at the time of the inspection. There was water flowing into the pond from
the ditch along the side of the Streeter Fill. The presettling basin of the pond (which
was recently cleaned) remains clean. The pond embankment was well vegetated
and stable at the time of the inspection. There were no erosional problems noted on
the pond embankment at the time of the inspection. The emergency spillway is a
riprapped open channel. The spillway is stable.
- The Section 28 Pond (NPDES 012A) was not inspected because of the mud and
water on the Sturgeon road.
- The freshwater pond at the bottom of the Taylor draw contained water. The pond
appeared stable at the time of the inspection. This pond is used for water for dust
suppression on the haul roads.
- Sump 2 contained water approximately one foot below the top and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The sump was stable at the time of the
inspection.
- Sump 3 contained water approximately one foot below the top and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The sump was stable at the time of the
inspection.
- Sump 4 contained water approximately one foot below the top and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The sump was stable at the time of the
inspection.
- Sump 5 contained water to the top of the sump but did not appear to be
discharging at the time of the inspection. The sump appeared to be stable at the
time of the inspection. The area around the sump was very muddy.
