SITE CHARACTERISTICS
Topography and Geomorphic Features
The average elevation of the site is 4990 feet and the proposed development site lies on
the primary alluvial terrace above the South Platte River. The site slopes very gently to
the west toward the river.
Hydrology
Irrigated agricultural fields are located east of the proposed development site on the
secondary terrace above the South Platte River. Tailwater from irrigation flows
downgradient ultimately leaving the fields and flowing onto the primary terrace creating
a band of wet meadow vegetation on the Reinoehl and Arends parcels.
Vegetation
The vegetation communities investigated during the survey include a meadow vegetation
community on the Reinoehl parcel and a wet meadow vegetation community and
vegetation along the irrigation tailwater ditch on the Arends parcel.
The meadow vegetation community located in the southwest corner of the Reinoehl
property is dominated by wheatgrass (Agropyron sp.) with small inclusions of cattail
(Typha latifolia), coyote willow (Salix exigua), spike rush (Eleocharis palustris), and
blowoutgrass (Redfreldia flexuosa). Plant species surrounding this wet area consist of
predominantly upland ruderal species.
The wet meadow vegetation community on the Arends site includes meadow foxtail
(Hordeum jubatum), spike rush, and smartweed (Polygonum lapathifolium). Ruderal
vegetation in the wet meadow includes prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), bindweed
(Convolvulus arvensis), lambsquarters (Chenopodium album), plantain (Plantago major),
Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), and red clover (Trifolium pratense). The vegetation
community along the waters edge of the ditch include meadow foxtail, spike rush,
knotweed (Polygonum ramosissimum), inland saltgrass (Distichlis spicata), three-square
(Scirpus americanus).
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate typical vegetation on the Reinoehl and Arends sites.
Soils
According to the Soil Survey of Adams County, Colorado (1974), three different soil
map units are located on the site. The map units are in bands trending southwest to
northeast that parallel the South Platte River channel. The soil units include Nunn loam
(0 to 1% slopes and 1 to 3% slopes), Dacono loam (0 to 1% slopes), and terrace
escarpments.
Ready Mixed Concrete Company's Arende, Reinoehi, &Archuleta Site Page 2
Ute Ladies'-tresses Orchid Survey (2007)
