farm/ranch houses on the properties. The McCanne Ditch runs through the western part
of the southern half of the expansion area. An "inholding" property surrounded on three
sides by proposed new mining and on the fourth side by Brighton Road occurs near the
southeast corner of the expansion area.
Water Information is described in more detail in Exhibit G and on Figure G-land
is also partially included as Figure C4 in this Exhibit C for reference. The Water
Information maps identify permitted well owners within approximately 1000 ft of the
site. The list of well owners that accompanies the water information map is included in
the text in Exhibit G. In addition, 100-year floodplain and floodway information is
depicted based on information taken from the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM)
for the site area. The relevant FIRM metadata was downloaded from the FEMA website
and overlaid using a graphical informational system (GIS). The database was current as
of February 2007 when the data was downloaded during November 2007. Both the
FEMA floodway and 100-year floodplain limits are shown separately for both the South
Platte River and for Third Creek.
A wildlife assessment was subcontracted to and performed by Savage and Savage
Environmental. No endangered species or critical habitats were identified. The assessed
impact to wildlife is minor. Additional wildlife information for the site expansion area in
its pre-mining condition is included in Exhibit H - Wildlife Information.
An inset map for the soils information described in Exhibit I - Soils Information
has been included as part of Figures for Exhibit C (Figure C5). The soils map from the
Natural Resource Conservation Service Soil Survey report for the site expansion area and
results of geotechnical test borings drilled for this permit amendment are described
further in the text of Exhibit I.
The type of present vegetation within the permit expansion area is generally
characterized by vegetable crops, overgrazed pasture grasses, and widely scattered,
isolated clusters and single cottonwood trees. In addition, limited wetland vegetation
occurs along the McCann Ditch and Third Creek. Additional vegetation information is
contained in Exhibit J of this permit amendment application package.
As part of this application, a wetlands assessment and a preliminary Spiranthes
orchid habitat assessment of the property were made to evaluate potential sensitive
16
