traction sand used during snow events. A new culvert was installed at the mine shop area
to direct additional storm water into the stormwater treatment system.
A meteorological station and stream data sensors were installed at URAD. The purpose
of the system is to gather data that can be used for short and long term closure operations
and to help monitor climatic affects on reclamation.
Approximately 4.5 acres of URAD and Clear Creek banks were reseeded. These areas
had been seeded in previous years but due to poor germination or industrial activities the
reseeding was required.
Annual weed removal occurred at the Mine property. The ground in electrical substations,
switch gear and transformer areas was addressed. A treatment plan has been devised for
control of Canada thistle, musk thistle, scentless chamomile and oxeye daisy to be
implemented during the 2009 summer season.
Mill Site
The tailing basin water pool increased to an elevation of 8836.5', which increased
disturbed acreage in the Tailing Deposition area in 2008 to 1,130 acres. This data is
based on survey information completed by W.W. Wheeler in late 2008.
Henderson continued with the removal and relocation of topsoil and growth media.
During the 2008 year, Henderson successfully relocated approximately 40,000 cubic
yards of soil to both the north stockpile, which is located on the northern end of the
tailings impoundment, as well as the SS4 stockpile located on the western side of the
impoundment. Additional soil was pushed away from encroachment by the tailing pool.
The Henderson Mill completed a timber sale agreement with the US Forest Service. The
timber sale pertained to the -1.5 mile section of conveyor which resides on USFS legal
easement. Approximately 50 acres of timber were cut on either side of the belt to
increase the defensible space against potential forest fire. Three acres were also cut
adjacent to the PC2/PC3 transfer building to improve defensible space. Henderson also
employed the use of a grinding contractor to remove dead, standing timber above the Ute
Creek reservoir. The removed timber was ground up and stockpiled for future use. All
timber sale and other tree removal areas were reseeded following completion.
Annual weed treatments continued around the tailing area and again in the Lost Creek
area. Common species treated in this effort include: Canada thistle, musk thistle,
scentless chamomile and oxeye daisy. There was a mid-summer application made and an
early fall made to combat invasive species at optimal growth stages. A total of
approximately 300 acres were treated in 2008.
The 3-Dam Seepwater line leak down test was completed. On May 14, 2008, the intake
valves for the seep water system were closed to determine if the valves were sealing
