BTUEC is required to monitor two mine water discharge locations. These locations are
the No. 5 Mine Sump (NPDES #003) and the 7-North Angle Sump (NPDES #024). Both
sites are required to be monitored weekly for flow and semi-monthly and quarterly for
NPDES water quality parameters (field parameters and TDS, Fe and Mn). The NPDES
discharge points were monitored as required with the full NPDES parameters monitored
in February, April, August and November. All of the required monitoring was performed
in the 2007 reporting year. All of the samples met applicable water quality standards.
BTUEC is required to monitor two surface water locations along the Williams Fork.
These locations are WF-1 and WF-2. The two sites require a monthly measurement of
flow and analysis of field parameters (temperature, conductivity, pH and TSS) and a
quarterly analysis for NPDES water quality parameters (field parameters and TDS, Fe
and Mn). The two Williams Fork surface water monitoring locations were monitored
monthly, as required, with the full water quality parameters monitored in February, April,
August and November. All of the required monitoring was performed in the 2007
reporting year. All of the samples met applicable water quality standards.
BTUEC is required to monitor one spoil spring location. This location is the No. 1 Strip
Pit. This site is an NPDES discharge point (NPDES #022), as it flows directly into the
Williams Fork River. The No. 1 Strip Pit spring requires weekly measurements of flow
level and semi-monthly and quarterly analysis of field and NPDES water quality
parameters (field parameters and TDS, Fe and Mn). All of the required monitoring was
performed in the 2007 reporting year. All of the samples met applicable water quality
standards.
BTUEC is required to submit quarterly Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR's) to the
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Water Quality Control
Division and the Division. These reports were submitted as required (received on 20
April 2007-1Q07, 30 July 2007-2Q07, 30 October 2007-3Q07 and 29 January 2008-
4Q09). All of the discharges were in compliance for the reporting period.
Although not included in the 2007 AHR, there are 24 ponds, sediment ponds or sediment
traps at the Eagle Mine Complex that require quarterly inspection. These ponds are 5-P5,
5-P6, 5-P7, HR-P1A, HR-P1B, 5-Pl, 5-P2, 5-P3, 5A-PI, SH-P1, SH-P2, 9-P5, 9-P6, 9-
P7, 9-P8, 9A-P1, 9A-P2, 9A-P3, 9A-P4, 9-P1, 9-P2, 9-P3, 9-P4 and the Wastewater
Treatment Pond. These ponds were inspected as required and the reports were forwarded
to the Division for review (5 April 2007-1Q07, 21 June 2007-2Q07, 15 October 2007-
3Q07 and 16 January 2008-4Q07). All of the ponds were reported to be in good
condition with only minor maintenance (including rodent control) being required.
The 2007 Annual Hydrology Report for the Eagle Mine Complex presented all of the
required information in a clear, concise manner. No exceedences of any NPDES or water
quality standards were noted in the information presented in the report. All necessary
documents and reports were submitted in a timely fashion. The Division does not have
any further questions or comments regarding the 2007 AHR.
