Sites Managed
Herbicide applications began near the substation below Robinson Lake Dam. Yellow
toadflax, oxeye daisy and Canada thistle populations were treated from this area to the
west around Eagle Park Reservoir. Several willow species and Engelmann spruce were
sprayed with Garlon 3A herbicide on the Robinson Lake Dam to prevent potential root
penetration into the dam that could compromise its structural integrity. The majority of
these woody plants were found growing on the downstream embankment. Several
patches of Canada thistle, oxeye daisy, and yellow toadflax were also sprayed at the foot
of Robinson Lake Dam. The majority of the area near Robinson Lake Dam was treated
by backpack spot spraying due to lack of safe access for the ATVs. Much of the area
around Eagle Park was treated with the ATVs.
Treatments then continued along the roadsides around Robinson Lake and toward Lake
Irwin from Robinson Lake Dam. This area was mainly covered by ATV spot spraying.
Again the main target in the area was found to be yellow toadflax. It should also be noted
that the service road that runs along the hillside north of Lake Irwin was surveyed. The
survey resulted in the finding and treating of very few weeds.
The next area treated was the Robinson Tailings Pond reclamation area and the Lower
McNulty reclamation area. Mayweed chamomile was found to be the primary target in
these areas. The treatments here were completed with both backpack and ATV
treatments, with ATVs covering much of the area by Robinson Tailings Pond and
backpack sprayers covering the Lower McNulty area.
Herbicide treatments then continued north, systematically along Rifle Range Road, past
the sludge densification plant, toward the pond shop and the Mayflower area. Much of
this area was treated from the ATVs. The primary weeds found in these areas were
Canada thistle and yellow toadflax. Canada thistle was found to be quite prevalent along
disturbed wet sections along Rifle Range Road, while moderate infestations of yellow
toadflax were treated on the topsoil stockpiles south of Mayflower Tailings Pond.
4
Climax Weed Report
1/22/09
