2008 Weed Management Activities
Habitat Management is a licensed commercial pesticide applicator that performed weed
management activities at Climax during the 2008 growing season. Qualified supervisor
Paul Selby led a crew of trained technicians in applying herbicides to targeted weeds on
the Climax site. Periodic herbicide applications occurred throughout the 2008 growing
season beginning July 23 and ending August 13. Herbicide spraying coincided with other
reclamation projects completed by Habitat Management to minimize mobilization costs.
Weed control efforts during 2008 were prioritized under the direction of Gary Slifka of
Climax and Ken Carlson of Habitat Management.
Targeted herbicide spraying was used to control Canada thistle, musk thistle, yellow
toadflax, mayweed chamomile and oxeye daisy. Other noxious weed species were not
found in areas managed this year. Work during the summer focused on areas and roads
around Robinson Lake, Robinson Lake Dam, Eagle Park Reservoir, Robinson Tailings
Pond, McNulty Gulch, biosolids stockpiles, 1 Dam, 2 Dam, Searle Gulch, Mayflower
Tailings Pond, Mayflower Dam, Storke Yard and Arkansas River Restoration. A
summary of areas treated, chemical names and quantities applied is available in
Appendix A.
Herbicide solutions were spot sprayed to targeted weed species with ATV sprayers in
most areas and with backpack sprayers in less accessible areas. An herbicide solution of
Tordon 22K was sprayed on yellow toadflax, while an herbicide solution of Milestone
was sprayed on Canada thistle, musk thistle, mayweed chamomile and oxeye daisy.
These herbicides are all broadleaf selective and have a very low potential for injury to
surrounding desirable native grass species. MSO Premium, a surfactant that increases leaf
adhesion and absorption, was included in herbicide solutions in addition to blue marker
dye to track applications. For aquatic and wetland sites, the aquatic use approved
herbicide Garlon 3A was sprayed.
3
Climax Weed Report 1/22/09
