Topsoil Replacement Thickness. The overall topsoil replacement thickness for the II-W disturbed area
was originally projected to be 1.3 feet for the mine area and 0.7 feet for the Tie-Across Haul Road. The
topsoil balance for the remaining disturbed was calculated as follows:
Mine Area
Total Disturbance Area
Permanent Facilities & Topsoil Replaced
Disturbed area requiring topsoil
Topsoil in stockpiles (Table 08.1)
Mean Replacement Depth
Tie-Across Haul Road
Total Disturbance Area
Topsoil in stockpiles (Table 08.1)
Mean Replacement Depth
1,285.3 acres
1,201.2 acres
84.1 acres
75.5 ac-ft
0.9 feet
(10.8 inches)
96.6 acres
73.1 ac-ft
0.7 feet
(9 inches)
REVEGETATION
• Seeding and Shrub Planting
A total of 6.1 acres were seeded in 2008. The majority of the area was seeded with approved Seed Mix No. 1
(see Table 08.2, Seed Mix No. 1 for constituents). In addition, winter wheat was added as a cover crop at 20
lbs/acre to the Seed Mix 1. Seed Mix No. 2, Mesic Drainage/Riparian, was used along the constructed
portions of postmining channels (see Table 08.3, Seed Mix No. 2 for constituents).
• Of the 6.1 acres seeded/planted, 1.9 acres are newly established shrub plots. These areas were hand seeded
with Concentrated Shrub Seeding Mix No. 6 (see Table 08.4, Seed Mix No. 6 for constituents).
Shrub Plots. Approximately 5,500 one gallon sized shrubs and trees were planted, and 400 aspens were
transplanted. 3,900 shrubs were planted in a new plot (2008-1) and 2,000 were added to plot 2005-2.
Locations of the sites are shown on the attached 2008 Chronological Seeding map. Following is a breakdown
indicating the number of species planted in each area during 2008.

Species 2008-1
Fenced 2005-2
Fenced
Total
Aspen -Transplanted 400 0 400
Aspen-1 gal 0 0 0
Chokecherry 0 0 0
Cottonwood 2,000 0 2,000
Gambels Oak 0 500 500
Serviceberry 500 500 1,000
-
Sumac 0 0 0
Willow 1,000 1,000 2,000
Total 3,900 2,000 5,900
Aspen Test Plot. During the fall of 2004, 400 selected aspen trees were planted according to the plan and
• timetable included in the Seneca II-W permit document. The study continued to examine growth, survival,
and water status during the 2008 growing season. The results for 2008 are in the attached 2008 Aspen Study.
2
