Bowie Mine, Terror Creek Reservoir Area PROJECT NO. 27-218
Pre-Subsidence Inspection
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY
This report presents the results of the pre-subsidence inspection of the Terror
Creek Reservoir and the surrounding area. The inspection was conducted to
evaluate the current condition of the two dams, the existing landslide and other
structures and surface features near the reservoir which might be materially
damaged by subsidence. Retreat longwall mining methods are expected to occur
at the northwestern limits of the Bowie permit area. The dams and reservoir are
outside of the predicted draw angle for subsidence; however the Division of
Reclamation Mining and Safety requested this inspection and documentation of
baseline conditions in a directive to the mine dated June 6, 2007.
The reservoir is located in the W/2SE/4 and the SE/4SW4, Section 28, Township
12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
Our inspection consisted of surface reconnaissance, a site visit and photographic
documentation of the existing conditions. This report has been prepared to
summarize the data obtained during the study. The site visit was conducted by
Roger Pihl and Keith Asay of Yeh & Associates, Inc. on October 2, 2007.
EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS
The Bowie #2 coal mine is located approximately 5 miles northeast of Paonia,
Colorado. A site map of the area is shown on Figure 1.
The topography of the site is relatively steep, mountainous terrain. The elevation
at the study area ranges from 8150 to 8300 feet. The slopes near the reservoir
are moderately to heavily vegetated with oak, pinion, juniper, aspen and some
conifers. The reservoir was essentially empty at the time of our site visit. This
report provides discussion and documentation by division of the reservoir and
surrounding terrain into five study areas which are shown on Figure 2.
