Refuse Area/Pit #1
Reseeded in 1997, this site's greatest challenge has been cheatgrass. 2008 provided
encouraging results for the establishment of perennial vegetation. Perennial grasses
appeared to be increasing in density and vigor. Forage kochia has shown exceptional ability
to establish under conditions present on this site.
Of special note, gooseberry-leaf globemallow has shown a notable abundance for the first
time since it was seeded in 1997. This may be a species to watch for future revegetation
use.
Shrubs establishment continues to struggle.
East Portal Area
Reseeded in 2001, this site has a generally good stand of perennial grasses and shrubs,
especially on the western portion of the site where the grade is less severe. Forage kochia
interseeded in the spring of 2007 has established well, especially on the more severe
portions of this site along the regraded access road.
Rock Dust Hole #1
Reseeded in 2001, this site continues to show an exceptionally good stand of perennial
vegetation. A diverse and highly productive stand of shrubs and grasses are present.
However, forb establishment appears lacking.
Recommendations
The reclaimed areas appear hydrologically stable and generally in good condition.
Cheatgrass continues to be the primary problem impacting vegetation success at many of the
sites. Further investigation into means for long term control of cheatgrass is warranted not
only for this mine site but for many mines throughout the and West.
