2008 Revegetation Survey
Introduction
Visual surveys of the referenced sites were made. Each site was walked or ridden with an
ATV to assess the site. Observations were then recorded on an inspection form for future
reference (see Appendix). The intent of the inspections was to:
1. Assess the effectiveness of past revegetation practices.
2. Identify potential problems that exist that may warrant further attention.
3. Provide insight to future revegetation efforts.
4. Provide information needed to develop strategies to correct potential
deficiencies.
Precipitation was near normal throughout most of the growing season following a
substantially wetter than normal winter. July and August was the only notable dry period
with total precipitation during these months being only 0.21" and 0.02" respectively. This
compares to a long term average of 0.79" and 0.95" for Rangely for these two months.
Vegetative production in 2008 was above normal.
Cheatgrass continues to be a regional problem providing strong competition for the more
desirable perennial species. In 2008 cheatgrass infestations were about average.
2005 Waterline Replacement
This site was reseeded in the fall of 2005. 2006 provided initial sprouting and early seedling
establishment followed by an extremely dry summer adversely effecting seedling
establishment and diversity. Perennial grass seedling establishment was good over most of
the site in 2008. Shrub and forb establishment is lacking, probably due to the drought
during the initial year of establishment. Weed problems included Russian thistle, annual
kochia, and cheatgrass. These weed problems are common and expected for early stage
reclamation.
