RECLAMATION VISUAL INSPECTION FORM
Date: 9/24/2008 Site/Map #: East Portal
Inspected By: Scott Wanstedt
Location: East Portal
Year Reclaimed: 2001 Seed Mix: Small/ Linear Mix plus additions
Dominant Vegetation: (include grasses, forbs, shrubs, warm season grasses, etc. by spp.)
See Notes
Erosion/Site Stabilization: Stable
Notes: Grasses dominated by crested and desert wheatgrasses. Western WG and Russian
wildrye are also relatively abundant but not predominating. Intermediate and bluebunch WG are
also present. Salina WR may be present but difficult to distinguish from Russian WR at the
current mature growth stage. Basin WR and smooth brome were observed in fairly good
abundance in the drainage channels.
Forbes/half shrubs are dominated by forage kochia. This half shrub is doing especially well along
the access road section where it dominates the plant community. It appears to do exceptionally
well on extremely harsh sites. Other perennial forbs observed were alfalfa, Lewis flax, and
fringed sage. These other forbs did not appear to be overly abundant.
Shrub establishment appears good. Black greasewood is coming back strong, probably due to
preexisting root material in the regraded material. Other shrubs doing well include 4-wing
saltbush, big sagebrush, shad scale, and rabbit brush. Another Atriplex spp. (probably A.
gardneri) was also observed as doing well along the access road.
Weed problems include halogeton, cheatgrass, and annual kochia. None of these weeds greatly
impacted the perennial vegetation over wide areas but in isolated pockets were able to dominate.
Further maturation of the site could lead to the elimination of halogeton and annual kochia.
Cheatgrass is expected to persist in a manner less than or consistent with the adjacent native
vegetation.
Recommendations: None
SAE Designation: Drill Hole: - Typical _ Flat - Well Vegetated
Soil Pile: - Typical _ Large - Well Vegetated
