(then) western permit boundary and the principal water supply well for the Town of
San Luis. Well designations for the five wells use a prefix of "SLM" and locations of
four of the five wells are shown in Figure G.3-1. Water quality data were initially
collected monthly for three quarters and quarterly for two more quarters for a total of
five quarters of monthly water quality data and a total of eight water quality samples
over this period of time. Since this time period, the wells have been sampled on a
quarterly basis. The water quality data are included as Appendix H.
Currently, BMRI conducts water quality sampling at the SLM wells on a quarterly
basis, and will continue monitoring the SLM wells on a quarterly basis according to
the existing agreement with the San Luis Water and Sanitation District. The quarterly
frequency for water quality monitoring is consistent with the nature of ground water
flow in the alluvial aquifer because the velocity of ground water flow is low enough
that monitoring on a more frequent basis is not warranted. BMRI proposes that a
similar sampling frequency be used for DRMS monitoring of SLM-2 as the
downgradient well (Figure G.3-1). Ground water well completion details for SLM-2
is shown in Figure G.4-1.
Under the San Luis Water and Sanitation District monitoring program for SLM
ground water wells, water quality samples are analyzed for calcium, sulfate, fluoride,
iron (dissolved), manganese (dissolved), WAD-cyanide, pH, and total dissolved
solids (TDS). BMRI proposes a similar analyte list, but without WAD-cyanide for
monitoring the irrigation activity (Table G.4-2). There is ample evidence from the
multiple years of sampling at San Luis that cyanide is not present in the West Pit
ground water.
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. 39
P:\Pmjects\212-Newmont(SenLWs)\S=Luis\Permit Amendment- WcA Pit Memgement\VS Report &PDFs\Text\PermitAmendment_v5c.doc December 2007
