G.4 West Pit and Salazar Ranch Monitoring
The current water monitoring program for the San Luis Mine is outlined in Technical
Revision 32, Table 1-4. The monitoring described therein for the TDA remains
active. However, this permit amendment revises the water monitoring in the vicinity
of the West Pit and Salazar Ranch.
G.4.1 West Pit Monitoring
The water management program described in this permit amendment essentially
continues the water management program implemented as part of TR-26. That is,
ground water levels will be maintained to prevent outflow from the pit area and to
limit fluctuation of the ground water table. Monitoring of the TR-26 water
management program has demonstrated that the combination of ground water
pumping in the West Pit and adjacent alluvial aquifer consistently and completely
controls the flow of ground water as planned. Furthermore, the extensive water
quality database also supports the conclusion that water quality has stabilized in the
West Pit and vicinity. Because of the long-term data record associated with the West
Pit water management program, and the fact that the revised water management
program outlined in this permit amendment is based on the same ground water
control program, BMRI proposes to revise the West Pit monitoring program as
indicated in Table G.4-1. The monitoring indicated in Table G.4-1 will maintain the
same level of environmental protection as has been provided.
G.4.2 Salazar Ranch and Vicinity
Monitoring of irrigation activities will be conducted at the Salazar Ranch. Table G.4-
1 provides a summary of monitoring associated with the irrigation activity. The
monitoring presented in this section will ensure that there remains no adverse affect
to ground water.
In 2001, BMRI entered into an agreement with the San Luis Water and Sanitation
District to install and monitor five ground water wells in the aquifer between the
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. 38
P:1Pmjectst212-Newmont(SenUus)\-. uis\Penrcmt Amendment - West Fit MntmgemenAV5 Report & PDFATextTetmitAmendmem_v5c.doc
December 2007
