Minor storage of materials, equipment, and supplies may occur throughout the mine site. Examples
of such storage include roles of conveyor belt at transfer stations, straw bales and mulching
materials commensurate with their use, clean rock for rip-rap and sediment control. Temporary
storage of equipment, materials, and supplies will also be allowed adjacent to facilities to facilitate
construction and repair on an as-needed basis.
Other storage areas for equipment and materials include the 'blisters' along the haul road. Blister
#2 (a.k.a. Treasure Island) serves as storage for outdated equipment, parts, and materials awaiting
salvage and sale. Blister #3 has been designated for road base storage. Other materials and
equipment such as reclamation materials, drill steel, water pipe, and contractor equipment and
supplies may also be stored on the blisters. These blister areas are not to be used for the storage
of liquids or other materials in a manner that could damage fish, wildlife, and related environmental
values.
More specific locations and containment structures are maintained for petroleum and liquid
materials. Such liquid storage areas are identified on Map 15 for the D-Portal Area.
Other bulk liquid storage facilities include the fuel storage at the dozer shop currently located at
Refuse Area 5a (peVoleum), deicing storage tank by the loadout, underground bulk fluid storage at
SH-2 near the B-Vent Shaft #2, and the hydrochloric acid tank by the water treatment facilities.
Magnesium chloride, or other chemical road dust suppressant, is stored on an as-needed basis in
tanks placed at the entrance to 'blister' #2 in a location draining to sediment pond DP-1. Limited
quantities of containerized reagents and petroleum products also occupy many of the various
buildings scattered throughout the mine site. LPG bulk tanks are also located north of Slot Storage.
Water storage facilities are discussed elsewhere but include the raw water tank, potable water tank,
and the lagoon.
Explosive storage is provided in a suitable licensed location at the end of the road past sediment
pond DP-1.
Used oils, greases, antifreeze and solvents are retained for recycling. Bulk storage tanks are
available for used oils and antifreeze at the west end of the mine maintenance shop. Used
chlorinated solvents are returned to their original containers far recycling or continued use by the
supplier. Drums and barrels containing used or obsolete liquid products are stored at the petroleum
barrel storage southeast of the D-Portal prior to being sent off for recycling or being reassigned
another use. Empty barrels are also stored next to this location prior to crushing and placement in
the scrap metal receptacles for recycling if they are not to be returned to the vender for
reconditioning or reused on site.
Technical Revision #fi4 (4/2007) IV-54
