Unidentified Sites
If during the course of mining operations, previously unidentified cultural and historic resources
are discovered, BME will insure that the site is not disturbed prior to its proper evaluation in
terms of the National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria. The mitigation plan
described above will be applied to sites that are determined eligible.
•

IV.O Noncoal waste storage facilities
Prior to transportation to a landfill, noncoal solid waste will be temporarily stored in designated
locations in a controlled manner. Most of such wastes are deposited in transportable dumpsters or
other trash receptacles located throughout the property. Locations of these receptacles can vary
depending on trash generating activities at any given time. Such receptacles are placed frequently
enough to minimize transport of wastes.
Were feasible, waste generation will be minimized by recycling materials no longer suitable for other
beneficial uses. Such materials include but are not limited to metals, oils, greases, antifreeze, and
lead-acid batteries. Appropriate storage is provided for the respective materials such as bulk
storage for the liquids, specially designated dumpster bins for smaller metal scrap, and used battery
storage within the warehouse.
Waste tires are temporarily stored near the maintenance facilities prior to final disposal in a suitable
landfill or taken for recycling. Such tires will be stacked in an orderly fashion in a manner
compatible with existing regulations. In general, accumulations of waste tires will be small and
stacked with adequate spacing to minimize the threat of spontaneous combustion. They will also be
located away from heat sources.
Spent chlorinated solvents are maintained in designated containers at the equipment maintenance
facilities at the D-Portal Area. These materials are periodically taken off-site for recycling.
Demolition rubble generated during reclamation may be stored on site and used as fill material when
compatible with the reclamation plan. Scrap metals and other materials and equipment generated
during facility dismantlement with intrinsic value will be salvaged or recycled when feasible.
Temporary storage for demolition rubble and salvaged materials will be on previously disturbed
ground in close proximity to their source. Such storage will be in a manner that does not pose a
threat to fish, wildlife, and related environmental values.
IV.P Equipment and material storage facilities
The majority of equipment and material storage facilities encompass the D-Portal Area.
• Permit Rev. 4 (11/2002) IV-53
