Processing Waste
The refuse disposal pile was traversed on foot starting at the southwest comer and travelling
toward the northeast comer. More roof bolts from past straw bale maintenance of
developing gullies were found. Although the gullies have now ceased to be a problem, roof
bolts should be removed as a safety precaution. Those pictured below are generally in the
southern half of the pile and are currently easily visible due to the winter condition of the
reclamation. The photo on the left show three roof bolts, one directly on the horizon. The
photo on the right shows two more further to the east along the top of the pile. Another site
is located at the crest of the refuse pile top in a southwesterly direction above pond 4.
Marking these locations with stakes or flagging as soon as practical may help locating them
when field conditions allow removal next spring.
Revegetation
Winter conditions have now been fully realized at this site. The ground is frozen in most
locations. Litter cover from past vegetation growth is very good in all locations. Shrubs and
shrub transplants continue to become more apparent in the reclaimed landscape. Cattle
grazing of the reclaimed area is not apparent and cattle were not observed on the reclaimed
area or in adjacent areas near the mine site. Wildlife usage by large ungulates like deer and
elk is evident although no recent sign was noted. Due to the secluded nature of the area and
limited public access, wildlife use of the area is likely to continue. Other than some shrub
transplant damage, no negative impacts of wildlife use are apparent.
4
