Jan 29 08 11:04a Greg Lewicki and Associat 3033466934 p.4
6. Water HandEng & Detention in Permit Area During Mining
All water from the main disturbed area is captured in the pit, which is large enough to handle a
PMP event. Water that does run off into the pit is absorbed into the gravel and becomes
groundwater. The berm around the pit and the hillside to the east prevent any undisturbed runoff
from entering the pit. The bottom of the excavation of the pit will be approximately 2 feet above
the static groundwater table in order to ensure that groundwater is not exposed through the
mining of the pit. The pit is intended to be a dry pit and as such the pit does not have a gravel
well permit or any other required water permits.
The expansion mining area will be mined from the east to the west, constantly maintaining a
gradient of the disturbed area toward the existing pit, therefore, there is no need for sediment
control ditches or sumps on the east side of the expansion area. An existing dirt road is the
eastern edge of the disturbed area. A small gully immediately east of this road which drains to
the north will not be affected by the operation.
The existing topsoil berm and the berm around the employee housing area are well vegetated and
have no significant signs of erosion.
As of the start of 2007, many of the pit slopes have also been reclaimed, but import material has
been significant and some of the slopes on the north side of the pit have been backfilled,
covering the reclaimed slopes of 3H: IV.
The new topsoil stockpiles to be created for the 2007 Amendment will have small berms around
the bottom to trap eroded soil during a runoff event. These stockpiles will also be seeded within
6 months of creation using a suitable temporary seed mix.
For the above reasons, no discharge permit is needed for the site. However, the existing pit is
covered by an NPDES permit number COG-500549 for discharges associated with storm water,
in case any discharges were to occur from a newly created topsoil berm or other minor feature.
Vagneur Pit June 07 D-14
