Fr'sh and Wildlife
Ci
•

Introduction of~ herbivores in newly reclaimed
areas increases soil compaction, removes litter,
and tramples seedlings, slowing ve~Tetation
cstablisltmcnt.
Figare 11. Reclaimed ~lethanc Drainage V-'ell
Alternative 2 and Alternative 3 are consisteatt
with the. Forest Plan, NFMA, FSM 2670 at
2670.22 -Sensitive; Species, Executive Order
1 1990 -Protection of Wetlands, and Executive
Order 131 120 -Invasive Species.
Fish and Wildlife
Affected Environment
The project area lies within a portion of the
watershed of the North Fork of the Gunnison
River. Elevations in the area range from
approximately 6,700 feet amyl to
approxinately 9,120 feet amsl. Topography
consists of small mesas dissected by draina~~e
channels which have been incised by
intel7ttittcnt and perennial streams.
1'en-estrial wildlife habitat consists of the
vegetation rover types discussed in the
!'e,e1e111U11 section. No old-growth habitat has
been identified to the project area- There have
been no old-growth surveys conducted in the
project area.
Two perennial streams occur in the project
area: the Dry T=urk of Minnesota Creek and
Deep Creek. neither is kno~~~n to support a
fishery.
Deep Creek is a small, tlash_y perennial stream
with scoured banks and sediment deposits
«'ithin the main channel. Deep G'eek ori~.!inates
in a landslide feature. Stream width varies from
1 to 1 > feet. Documented substrate types
include bedrock, lar~~e and small boulders witl.~
mixed cobble, small boulders, cobble, coarse
gravel, gravel, sand, and silt. Deep Creek is
prone to blo~~~-outs during large rain events;
however. it still supports a moderately
productive and diverse benthic community
(WV~~E 1997). Open bench-land riparian areas
characteri~c the upper reaches of Deep C'rcek:
what were once beaver dams are now tilled in
writh tall willow, alder, and sedges (Caret- spp.).
In addition to these natw•al riparian areas, there
are some man-made stork ponds located in
some of the intermittent streams that feed into
Deep Creek ti'om the west. These stock ponds
are spring-fed by small perennial seeps and
springs.
The Dry Fork of Minnesota Creek is a small
intermittent stream with portions used as an
irrigation ditch. The ditch causes a deep,
incised channel and reduced flows. Stream
«~idth varies from ~ to 15 feet. Ui~cumentcd
substrate types include Sillall bouldel'ti, cobble,
coarse gravel, gravel, sand, silt, clay, and
cobble bed with a mix of ~~ravel and sand.
Limiting factors to a fishery include blow-outs,
a highly erosive drainage, Clow t7uctuation duo
to irt'i~ation, and excessive siltation. This creek
is dominated by a shrub coy er type consisting
mainly of tall willows and alders (\'~'ang 2000.
This shrub-dominated area is probably a tall
willow type consisting of Geyer's willow (Scrlit-
~c~t~c~rialla), mountain willow (S. eastwoodiac),
or DrutllmOTld'S willow (S.
