Limited-Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 2 of 10)
40 11. Size of Undertaking (acres): The undertaking as defined for this inventory consists of a total of 235 acres, which
excludes areas that have been previously inventoried for cultural resources.
Size of Project (if different): 26 acres were intensively inventoried for cultural resources - see "Comments" below.
12. Nature of the Anticipated Disturbance: Preparation of the drill sites will require removal of vegetation and
substantial ground disturbance using heavy machinery within drill pads estimated to be roughly one-half acre in
size. New access roads will be constructed and existing roads upgraded.
13. Comments: See Comments under Project Location below for additional information.
III. PROJECT LOCATION
Please attach a photocopy of USGS Quad. clearly showing the project location. The Quad. should be clearly
labeled with the Prime Meridian, Township, Range, Section(s), Quad. map name, size, and date. Please do
not reduce or enlarge the photocopy.
14. Description: The project areas are located in Gunnison County, Colorado, on lands administered by the USDA
Forest Service, Gunnison National Forest (Figures 1-3).
15. Total number of acres surveyed: An estimated 26 acres were intensively inventoried.
17. Comments: The project comprised the archaeological inspection of 48 drill locations and 2 miles of associated
access roads. As shown on the attached maps (Figures 2 and 3), intensive inventory was feasible - and carried out - at
only 27 drill locations and within approximately 5,885 ft (1.1 miles) of access road. Within these parcels and access
road corridors, all open areas with visible ground on slopes less than 30 percent were intensively examined for cultural
resources. The amount of area within each parcel or road corridor that could be inventoried varied widely, from a
minimum of about 1 percent to a maximum of around 50 percent. The remaining parcels and road segments were
unsurveyable because of a combination of steep (i.e., greater than 30%) slopes, dense brush that prevented or restricted
access, and heavy vegetative cover that obscured the ground surface and rendered traditional archaeological survey
methods virtually useless. Therefore, only a relatively small percentage of the project area was actually intensively
inventoried for cultural resources.
•
2
