Because of the limited available topsoil, Climax will make the
most and best use of this resource. Sites presently designated
for topsoil utilization (generally 4"-6" to utilize the resource
on as many sites as possible ) are noted in Appendix D. These
sites generally are those which will support self-sustaining
vegetation and which are readily visible from Colorado Highway
91 . Over time, areas designated for topsoil application may
change depending on such variables as additional topsoil avail-
ability , site reclamation priority , and site specific use .
These changes will be noted through the annual report process as
they occur. Regardless of future changes, all topsoil will be
reapplied and utilized for reclamation on the Climax property.
Area/Site Specific Reclamation Planning
As stated, Appendix D summarizes the various reclamation strate-
gies and timetables for the six Map ID areas (A - F ) and the
sites specific to each area. The use of the term "standard" in
this appendix refers to the use of seed mix, amendments, and
reclamation methods used in the past and considered as standard
for the Climax Mine. In the interest of brevity, these site
strategies are not specifically detailed in this amendment text.
• Non-active Areas - Interim Reclamation
Reclamation of sites which are no longer active or needed for
operations began in 1987 and will continue annually until
satisfactory completion. Specific sites scheduled for interim
reclamation are listed and discussed under Map ID Areas B and C
in Appendix D. Sites currently under reclamation or in the pro-
cess thereof (the Arkansas River area ) are listed in Map ID Area
D of Appendix D. When the reclamation process is initiated for
an area specific site, that site will be moved into the Area D
section of this Appendix (which, as previously stated, will be
filed with the annual report) .
Priority Interim Reclamation
Priority interim reclamation areas (243 acres ) are found in Map
ID Area B . These sites include the tailing pond dam faces .
Specific reclamation work on these areas was initiated in 1988
with the construction of a haul road underpass beneath Colorado
Highway 91 between the "E" dump and Buffehr reservoir.
In 1989, a truck haul road will be constructed from the minesite
along the Robinson tailing pond to No. 1 dam. This road will be
• used to haul rock from the minesite to No . 1 dam and, ulti-
mately, the three tailing pond surfaces for rock capping and
stabilization of these sites . The feasibility of seeding rock
capped areas will be tested in the future .
E-6
