III 'll'IIIIII'll'11
999
3-Dam Borrow Area Reclamation Plan
The attached figure outlines the proposed areas for borrow area development in the 3-
Dam cap project. There are three borrow areas and two riprap areas designated for the
project. Each is located in close proximity to 3-Dam in an attempt to minimize haul
distance. In addition, Area C19 (from 1989 Amendment Am-002, not shown) may be
used for capping material.
The contractor has been given the option of using any area within the outlined 33 acres
for materials needed in the project. Evaluation of the borrow areas in the fall of 1996
showed that approximately 1.1 MM cubic yards was available for use. About 300,000
cubic yards of material will be required to cap 3-Dam. Area C19 will provide
approximately 100,000 cubic yards assuming that it meets needed cap material
specifications. Consequently, Climax expects that no more than 20 of the total 33 acres
will be disturbed by the project.
Reclamation of the borrow areas includes the following considerations:
• Topsoil will be removed from all disturbed' areas and will be stockpiled for
replacement at the end of the project. Topsoil recovery will attempt to match
preexisting depths up to 6 inches. Any remaining topsoil will be stockpiled,
stabilized, and used in future reclamation activities. The contractor will attempt to
minimize the extent of disturbance at the borrow sites.
• Stormwater controls will be utilized in the establishment and management of the
borrow areas.
• Woody vegetation will be managed within the Climax biosolids project.
• Upon completion of the borrow activity, the borrow areas will be regraded to a
configuration that approximates original 'contour. The regrade slopes will vary
between 2H:1V and 41-1:1V below repose angle.
• Revegetation will target post mining land use of Rangeland using the Climax seed
mixture and revegetation methods outlined;in the 1989 amendment. Seeding and
mulching will be occur in the fall of 1997'provided site preparation and topsoiling are
completed by October 15. Climax may opt to stabilize the borrow areas in 1997 for
topsoiling and seeding in 1998. The decision will rely on project progress and the
onset of inclement fall weather.
