Crater:
Thank you for your letter in response to the mailing
regarding the permit amendment filed by Amax Mineral
Resources Company for the Climax Mine. I have made the
name and address changes as per your letter.
I will answer your questions in the order raised in your
letter.
Question: What does it (the amendment) mean?
Answer : The Climax Mine was permitted to operate at a
rate of 50 , 000 tons per day through the year 2020 and
beyond . Current and projected future market conditions
dictate that the mine probably will never again operate at
that level . The mine will be operated as a market "swing
Producer" ; an operation which can rapidly come on-line and
Produce at a low level for short or extended periods with
significantly fewer employees in a highly efficient man-
ner. A swing producer operates to meet specific market
demand and temporarily ceases production as demand
decreases .
The original permit indicated that at the 50,000 ton per
day production rate , more that 11 , 000 acres of Climax
owned land ultimately would be affected by the operation.
Under the new projections , less than 4000 acres will be
affected . The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act
requires that a permit amendment be filed when major
changes in operations and/or affected lands will occur.
The present amendment was filed with the state to bring
the permit into better conformance with actual and pro-
jected operations at Climax. The manner in which the mine
is operated and the land disturbances remain unchanged.
