Christy Woodward
September 17, 2008
Page 8
completion of 5 consecutive quarters of groundwater quality data. Therefore, available data
will be included in the hydrogeological report and the additional data will be compiled and
provided to the state when it becomes available. Water quality data will continue to be
collected from the downgradient groundwater monitoring wells until the objectives of this
work plan are achieved.
The intent of installing groundwater wells below the water table is to provide free-flowing
wells. Groundwater flow at the Sunday Mines Group is strongly controlled by local
discontinuities in the bedrock such as bedding planes and fractures. These discontinuities
may cause local perturbations in the groundwater table. A contingency has been included in
the proposed monitoring well design to facilitate sampling using a peristaltic pump in the
event that the wells are not free flowing.
Monitoring well samples will be analyzed in the field for pH, electrical conductivity,
dissolved oxygen, temperature, and oxidation-reduction potential. As recommended by
DRMS, groundwater quality will be evaluated based on samples submitted for all
constituents listed under the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
(CDPHE) Regulation 41 (groundwater), minus the exceptions noted below. The CDPHE
Regulation 41 constituents are listed in Fable 3.
DRMS recommended (DRMS 2008b) that various constituents from these CDPHE regulations
be omitted from the analyte list, which include total'coliforms, asbestos, free cyanide,
chlorophenol, color, corrosivity, foaming agents, odor, and phenol. In addition, DRMS
recommended that hardness, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and oxidation reduction
potential be added to the analyte list. Tritium has-been added to the groundwater analyte list
in order to provide information regarding the age of the groundwater and the degree of
connection between surface water and groundwater. The complete analyte list is shown as
Table 2. Upon review of initial groundwater quality data by DRMS and Denison, parameters
that repeatedly show concentrations below detection limits may be dropped from the analyte
list, p&-DRMS' recommendations.
Field Activities, Methods, and Procedures
This section discusses equipment and procedures for groundwater well installation and
groundwater sampling.
Equipment and Supplies
Groundwater Monitoring Well Installation
The following is a list of supplies needed to install groundwater monitoring wells:
¦ 350 feet of 1 inch schedule 80 PVC pipe, 5-foot long flush joint threaded sections
¦ 25 feet of 1 inch schedule 80 PVC slotted screen pipe, 5-foot long flush joint threaded
sections
