Processing Waste
The faces of the Refuse Pile Expansion pile and the Lower Refuse Pile showed no evidence of
structural instability. Survey markers were in place on the faces of both piles. The slope faces were
grass-covered. The top of the Lower Pile is being used for equipment storage, as approved.
Support Facilities
No problems were found in the following areas: materials storage bench, trash compactor, explosives
storage area, barrel storage building, hydraulic components storage, the Sylvester Gulch mine water
pumping facility, and the polishing pond.
Topsoil
Grass cover appeared adequate for controlling erosion on the following stockpiles: Main Topsoil
Stockpile, Sylvester Gulch Subsoil, Topsoil Piles#1 and#3 in Sylvester Gulch, the Sylvester Gulch
Shaft Site stockpile, and the Deer Creek Shaft stockpile.
General Mine Plan Compliance
The operator appeared to be following the approved mine plan.
Slides and Damage
A rock slide recently occurred in Sylvester Gulch where longwall mining is occurring in Panel 25. The
slide is in an area designated as having high rock fall potential on map 53b.
Offsite Support Facilities
Topsoil stockpile markers and sediment control measures were in place in the Corrals laydown/staging
area, Deer Creek Shaft, and the borrow area for the Monument Dam work. A mine W. sign was
properly displayed.on the Forest Service road at the Corrals laydown/staging area. There was no
activity at the Deer Creek Shaft where the vent shaft and emergency escape shaft are being raised-bore
drilled.
Reclamation Success
Vegetative cover appears to be providing long-term erosional stability on the reclaimed disturbed areas
in the Lone Pine Gulch area. Grasses and shrubs are well-developed on these lands, which have
received Phase I bond release.
Documents Received
No documents were received during the inspection.
4
