No springs, seeps, or water of any kind was observed during the traverse of the proposed
RDA. Baseline geotechnical drilling also confirmed the lack of subsurface water in this area.
Support Facilities
Upon arrival, a vehicle was noted on a flat bench near a well casing immediately above pond
P-6. Map 9, Hydrologic Monitoring Locations indicates the well is VB-06-3, a Mesa Verde
formation well completed above the coal seam. The vehicle belonged to Aaron Bishop, a
contractor conducting water sampling for Jim Stover. After a brief discussion, the inspection
continued.
The flat bench at this location is the proposed location for the prep plant. The area appears
ideal for some type of facility with few trees and a relatively large area to construct the
necessary facilities. A large portion of this area is visible in the photo above containing the
arrow for the RDA corridor.
Fish and Wildlife
Evidence of deer and elk usage of the area was noted and is consistent with the area
identified as winter range. No deer or elk were observed during the inspection. Lizards and
small birds appear to be the main inhabitants of the proposed lower facility area. Cliff areas
are likely to be used by raptors for nest, although none were spotted on the cliffs east of the
proposed RDA.
The inspection concluded during light rain.
5
