MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-9000-048
INSPECTION DATE: g/2£i/ng INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: MAC JLE
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by Michael Cunningham of DRMS, Jared Ebert of DRMS, and Allen Watts of
Kiowa County. This was a routine monitoring inspection of the mine site; the last inspection was conducted on
August 11, 2003. The Schmidt Gravel Pit is located 5.5 miles north of Towner, Colorado off of County Road 78.
The permitted acreage encompasses 9.5 acres.
The inspector observed that there was no permit sign posted at the entrance to the mine site. Mr. Watts stated
that mining activities have not taken place at this site for at least four years. The site was clean and free of
trash; no equipment was present at the time of this inspection.
The topsoil stockpile was in place as indicated on the Mining Plan Map. Lack of vegetation on the topsoil
stockpile was noted as a problem on a past inspection. The topsoil stockpile was found to be stable and
adequately vegetated. The northern side of the stockpile had Blue Gramma present and the southern side had
Blue Gramma and Kochia present. A berm was in place along the east side of the pit. There is a highwall on the
East and West sides of the pit; the highwall is approximately 20' in height. The North and South sides of the pit
slope down to the pit bottom. According to Mr. Watts, the County has only mined in the southern portion of the
permit area.
The inspector did not observe any boundary markers around the pit. The lack of boundary markers on the NW
and NE corners had been cited as a problem on a previous inspection that took place on September 27, 2001.
A follow up inspection on December 18, 2001 had found that boundary markers had been erected and the
problem was considered abated. The inspector notified Mr. Watts of the lack of a permit sign and boundary
markers.
This concluded the inspection.
I & E Contat Address
NAME: Allen Watts
OPERATOR: Kiowa County
STREET: P_ n_ Box 100
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Fnds C-0 8103h
cc: t CE
F BL
r FS
r HW
F HMWMD (CH)
F SE
F WQCD (CH)
OTHER
