West Elk Mine
Seasonal Variations in Groundwater Ouality
Data from selected wells in the permit area with relatively long records covering different
seasons were evaluated for seasonal trends. In general, the parameters evaluated do not
exhibit defined seasonal changes in concentration. Levels of TDS, TSS, and pH do not vary
appreciably over the year. This is due to the poor aquifer characteristics of the formations in
the permit area and lack of recharge and connection to surface water sources. However, wells
installed in shallow sediments including alluvium show seasonal water quality and water level
trends. Typically, concentrations of iron and manganese are elevated during fall and winter month's
season along with low water levels.

2.04-75 Revised June 2005PRlO, March 2006; Rev.
