Sensitive Species -Terrestrial Vertebrates
Townsend's big-eared bat: Townsend's big-eared bats have not been formally documented in
the project area.
Fringed myotis: Fringed myotis bats have not been formally documented in the project area.
Spotted bat: No spotted bat occurrence has been formally documented within the proposed
project area.
Wolverine: Suitable wolverine habitat is lacking in the project area.
American marten: None were observed during the 2008 surveys. No marten tracks were
observed in the E-Seam Panels 1 & 2 area during predator-prey track surveys conducted in the
area during the winter of 2007-2008.
Bald eagle: No occurrence of bald eagle has been formally documented within the proposed
project area. The nearest known bald eagle activity is along the North Fork of the Gunnison
River. Suitable nesting and reproductive habitat for bald eagle is found along the river, but is not
present in the proposed project area. Bald eagles do winter along the North Fork of the Gunnison
River and in the winter possibly make foraging flights through the area searching for carrion.
Winter roost site habitat for bald eagle is not present within the project area.
Peregrine falcon: No peregrine falcons were observed during the 2008 surveys.
Northern goshawk: No northern goshawks were observed during the surveys. One was
observed in March while conducting winter wildlife studies. This bird was observed in the Lick
Creek drainage.
Northern harrier: No northern harriers were observed during the 2008 surveys.
Yellow-billed cuckoo: This species has been addressed previously in this report.
Olive-sided flycatcher: While conducting surveys this year and in prior years olive-sided
flycatchers have been commonly observed. This year more of these birds were observed than in
the past. Most of these birds were observed in aspen stands although a few were observed in
mountain shrub. There are large expanses of suitable nesting and foraging habitat for these birds
that will not be affected by the proposed development activities. As a result, it is assumed that
the proposed access road and drill site construction in the E-Seam Panels 1 & 2 will not
adversely affect these birds in the project area.
Loggerhead shrike: None of these birds were observed during the 2008 surveys.
Purple martin: One pair of purple martins were observed nesting in an aspen stand adjacent to
the Dry Fork of Minnesota Creek. Another pair was observed nesting in an aspen stand up
drainage from Two Ponds in the Sylvester Gulch drainage. These are the same locations where
purple martins were observed nesting in 2007.
6
