Summary of Proposed Mining and Reclamation
The total acreage of the various parcels that make up
the property is 14.871 acres, but because easement
areas granted to the City of Thornton and a long
driveway out to Dahlia Street are excluded from any
mining activity, only 13.68+ acres is within the DRMS
permit area. Mining will be undertaken on just under
11 acres, as 2.7+ acres are designated as setback
areas where no mining, but some minor grading and
revegetation activities, will occur.
The sand and gravel re-sources average 151+ in depth,
but tends to be thinner on the east side of the
property. Mining will be undertaken using front-end
loaders, scrapers, motor graders, track-hoes,
bulldozers, dump trucks, and a water truck. A small
processing plant will be utilized on the site, and
relocated on-site as needed to allow mining of all the
available aggregate resources. The hours of operation
for both the mining and reclamation activities would
be 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, except for equipment
maintenance, emergencies, and contracts requiring
either export of aggregate material or import of fill
material during other hours of operation. Depth to
ground water is 6'-10'+ below the existing ground
level, and this will be a wet mining operation with
no-dewatering or slurry wall/clay liner being
installed. A 21+ strata of sand and gravel material
will be left at the base of the excavation to provide
for hydraulic conductivity after mining and
reclamation is completed.
Access to the site will be the existing driveway onto
the 1-76 Frontage Road. A 5-year deadline is requested
to complete all mining, and will generate up to 110
round-trip trucks/day on days when export of material
is occurring. A 10-year deadline is requested for
reclamation completion, and the import of inert fill
material is expected to generate 60 round-trip truck
trips/day on days when inert material is imported into
the site. During the period when mining and
reclamation activities are occurring concurrently, as
much as possible the operator will combine these truck
trips by having trucks bringing inert material into
the property, exit the property with excavated
aggregate material.
4
